Project Description:
The viaduct consisted of an 11-span, 540m long, 3-lane dual carriageway. As it is located at a road junction which is heavily used by vehicular traffic, a construction method that minimised disruption to traffic flow was used. The method adopted was the Incremental Launching Method which was used to construct spans of up to 60m across the road junction. This method eliminated the need for temporary closure of the road junction, which would have been necessary if the conventional method was used.
The 5 main spans of the box girder (45m, 3 X 60m, 45m) were constructed with the Incremental Launching Method. Two approach structures with open section (double-tee beams) were constructed on scaffolding at each end of the launched part consisting of 2 spans each (30m and 45m).
The incrementally launched section was divided into 19 box girder segments, each of length 9m to 15m. The segments were cast, one at a time, against the previous segment at a casting yard located at one end of the viaduct. The segments were then post-tensioned and pulled out of the casting yard by two 480-tons hydraulic jacks. A typical construction cycle is 8 days.
